Flash firmware at your own risk. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, disabling and enabling and even checked Natshita Update for newer driver updates and it says I have the most recent driver. You have to pick the slowest burn speed available.
I was lucky thet the drive read the restore disk OK. I too have a toshiba satellite with the matshita drive it reads some cd’s but not others, is inconsistent in allowing me to listen to different albums.

Later I was updating with all the updates of Microsoft for the windows xp. Solution found, but one that’s unlikely to help most people.
Symptoms started with “bad disk” or “corrupted data” went back and forward from not reading CD’s but reading DVDs and vice versa to finally creating only coaster discs when try to use it as a burner and major data corruption when installing software.
